Support, Then Design & Build

Learning Spaces has a team of talented individuals submersed in Higher Ed. While interacting with our faculty and students in these rich learning environments, we make discoveries that impact our design concepts. We install technology for the latest trends, and because we cycle equipment on a regular basis, none of our rooms become antiquated. If it becomes apparent that we need to make a major shift in the way we do things in the classrooms, we first propose our idea to the General Purpose Classroom Advisory Committee (GPCAC). Likewise if a change is to occur that impacts students in the lab, we run it by the Student Advisory Board. Once we have approval, we make the necessary changes and do our best to inform our users via campus wide and targeted announcements.

Standards

We maintain a handful of standard room configurations that form the basis of all of our A/V system installations. These standards allow us to provide consistent, simple, yet powerful learning spaces. There's nothing rigid or inflexible about our standards, in fact, it's easier to deploy new technologies if rooms have similar A/V components. We also do our part to conserve much needed resources. All of the following are considered when updating our designs; procurement efficiencies, energy consumption, items consumed (batteries & lamps), remote management and preventative maintenance.

Refresh Cycles

All Information Services supported classrooms and lecture halls are on 4 and 8 year equipment cycles. Typically, computers and projectors are replaced every 4 years. After 8 years of service, all technology is refreshed to allow for changes in pedagogy, and in the A/V industry.

Where do we go from here?

Cost reduction strategies such as the Media Ready concept, Collaborative technology as the back bone of active learning in person or at a distance. Offering our support model as a core service to departments who would rather not spend time and money supporting learning spaces.

The Classroom Calculator version 3.3 is an outcome of our ongoing efforts to improve the quality of our campus owned classrooms. In it's current state, it is restricted for use at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, and may not be readily adaptable to your situation. However, we are open to collaboration on future development. For questions/comments email Keith Derickson.

Classroom Management

About GPCAC

The General Purpose Classroom Advisory Committee (GPAC) is charged to identify and resolve issues concerned with the use, design, and equipping of all classrooms that are the responsibility of the campus as a whole.

  • Representatives of facilities, student affairs and all academic programs participate in this committee structure that has fostered shared sense of responsibility for these heavily used learning spaces.
  • Recommendations and assessments developed by the committee carry enormous weight with the University's administration.
  • GPAC has been on a five-year mission to upgrade the classroom physical facilities and expand the number of rooms that include modern, standardized instructional technology equipment in support of class lectures. Their work has resulted in expanded funding for multimedia equipment and physical renovation for the majority of these rooms.
